By using the unique approach that we have developed with a team of movement and pain experts, our highly trained clinicians are able to help athletes return to sport much quicker and with more confidence. We accomplish this by using various treatment methods, including manual therapy, movement strategies, strength training, and performance of sport-specific tasks.

What Is Sports Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation?

Sports physical therapy and rehabilitation is a specialized branch of healthcare that focuses on reducing, treating, and rehabilitating sports-related injuries. This type of therapy is designed to help athletes recover from injuries, manage pain, and improve their physical performance.

When it comes to treating pain in athletes, the worldwide consensus is that we are not treating it appropriately with the current healthcare model.

Organizations ranging from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and the US military have put out official statements that athletes in pain, in particular elite athletes, should be treated by sports medicine clinicians who have a thorough understanding of the biopsychosocial model.

Specific to physical therapy, the IOC recommends that physical therapists who treat athletes should be trained to “identify and address inaccurate conceptualizations of pain and injury plus psychosocial and contextual influences on pain” and be able to educate “the athlete regarding the role of the central nervous system in pain, especially in chronic pain.”

DMR Move fully recognizes these concerns and has provided extensive training for all its staff to meet and exceed international standards for the treatment of pain in athletes.

Performance Therapy at DMR Move

DMR Move offers specialized performance therapy that is catered to a variety of athletes. Our approach to sports medicine and rehabilitation is grounded in the latest research and evidence-based techniques, which allows us to provide our clients with the highest quality care.

Part of what sets DMR Move apart from other sports physical therapists is our unique approach to rehabilitation. We use a process-based approach called the Human Rehabilitation Framework (HRF). This framework is the result of extensive collaboration between experts in pain science, rehabilitation, behavioral science, and psychological flexibility training, and is designed to help our clients learn practical skills that lead to real and lasting changes. We also utilize state-of-the-art equipment like the AUX system, along with our personalized care, to provide the best sports medicine rehabilitation for our clients.

Working with a Physical or Occupational Therapist for Athletes

At DMR Move, our highly trained and experienced physical and occupational therapists work closely with our clients to help them achieve their goals. We believe that the key to successful rehabilitation is a strong and collaborative relationship between the client and therapist.

Our therapists have extensive backgrounds in anatomy, physiology, exercise science, and kinesiology, and are trained in a variety of manual therapy techniques, pain science, and orthopedic and sports performance strategies to provide personalized care depending on the needs of the athlete. During a typical session, our therapists will work with the client to learn their story and assess their movement behaviors, identify areas of weakness, and develop a customized treatment plan.

Using the Human Rehabilitation Framework

Our sports physical therapy program is grounded in the Human Rehabilitation Framework, which is designed to help our clients achieve lasting changes. This framework is based on the latest research in pain science, rehabilitation, behavioral science, and psychological flexibility training, and is designed to help athletes learn practical skills that can get them back to sport more efficiently and with better confidence.

The HRF is based on the idea that pain and movement problems are not just physical issues, but also involve your thoughts, feelings, and life situation. To account for all these factors, the HRF begins with a thorough assessment of the athlete’s biopsychosocial profile.

Creating a Biopsychosocial Profile

Creating a biopsychosocial profile is an essential part of the rehabilitation process for athletes. This profile includes information about the athlete’s health history, body behavior, values, and goals. Using this information, our team of experts develops a customized treatment plan that is tailored to the athlete’s specific needs and goals.

By creating a biopsychosocial profile, our clinicians gain a better understanding of the athlete as a whole person, not just a collection of symptoms or injuries. This comprehensive profile allows us to address not only the physical aspects of the athlete’s condition but also their mental and emotional needs. We believe that this is the key to successful rehabilitation and long-term health and wellness for many of our athletes.

The Benefits of Physical Therapy for Athletes

Pain Management

Our goal is to help our clients learn strategies they can use to work with their pain without having to stop participating in their sport. Allowing our clients to continue their value-driven behavior is part of our program. We can accomplish this by assisting our clients with movement behavior experiments, hands-on techniques, and sport-specific training to keep them participating safely despite pain.

Improve Movement Variability

We provide different movement experiments that help our clients learn about what movement options they have available and how to work with them. This includes analyzing sport-specific movements and exploring ways that can allow our clients to continue participating in their sport with fewer restrictions and less pain interference.

Improve Strength

Our state-of-the-art facility is fully equipped to provide the appropriate physical stresses needed for all athletes to meet the demands of their sport. Many of our clinicians have received advanced training in strength and conditioning certifications to understand how to safely improve strength that is needed for sport and injury reduction.

Reduce Fear of Participation

Our patented, bodyweight-unloading AUX technology can assist athletes who are experiencing fear of participation or have limited mobility, allowing them to safely participate in activities they may have avoided.

Aid Recovery and Rehabilitation

Our sports physical therapy program is designed to get our athletes back to sport more quickly and more confidently. By using our comprehensive approach and creating a biopsychosocial profile, our clinicians are able to address not only the physical nature of the injury but also the emotional and mental barriers as well.
